Free ultrasound medical check-ups provided for all girls and women in the Bijeljina region - „Women in Elections in BiH“ project ensured procurement of two mobile ultrasound devices

December 3, 2021

In 2020, 1,554 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Bosnia and Herzegovina. On average, about 570 people die from this disease every year, which can be suppressed in most cases with early diagnosis.

For the first time, all girls and women from the entire Bijeljina region will be provided with free regular check-ups, as two mobile ultrasound devices have been donated to the Bijeljina Health Center through the project "Women in Elections in BiH" funded by the Kingdom of Sweden and implemented by UNDP in BiH.

"In March this year, we established the Department for Disease Prevention, which is the future of medicine. We now can examine every woman over the age of 15 in all 26 outpatient clinics covered by the Bijeljina Health Center, with the aim of preventing breast cancer. The examination is free for all women and disabled people have priority ", the director of the Bijeljina Health Center Danijela Đukin said, thanking the project" Women in Elections in BiH", funded by the Kingdom of Sweden and implemented by UNDP in BiH, as well as the Mayor of Bijeljina and Gradska administration.

"We are grateful to the City of Bijeljina and the Health Center for the partnership. With the addition of these two mobile ultrasound devices, almost 4,000 women living in the Semberija region, within a radius of some 90 kilometers from the center of Bijeljina, will be covered by this health service. Also, the City Administration provided significant professional and logistical assistance in the implementation of this project. We are doing this because we know that we cannot have a socially active woman if she is not healthy, able to work and stable ", the project manager Lejla Ramić Mesihović emphasized.

We believe that these devices will accelerate the diagnostic process and raise the opportunities and awareness of our fellow citizens about the importance of prevention and regular control. We will continue to cooperate and support UNDP projects and the Bijeljina Health Center, added the mayor of Bijeljina, Ljubisa Petrovic.

The aim of the procurement is to support the establishment of a free breast examination service for women from rural parts of Semberija. The total value of the procurement is 40,312.50 KM, of which the City of Bijeljina provided a participation of 17,860.20 KM.
