Within the project „Strengthening of DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course) Strategy and Improving National Tuberculosis Programme(NTP), Including Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis and Infection Control, in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Republika Srpska have started rehabilitation of wards for Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis Control in University Clinical Hospital Foca and in PHI Hospital Trebinje, which will be completed by the beginning of September. This project is funded by GFATM (Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculoses and Malaria).
Also, rehabilitation of the Pulmonary Diseases Ward at the General Hospital "St. Apostol Luka" in Doboj and works on the establishment of the MDR ward at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, Clinical Center Banja Luka will start at September.
Rehabilitation of the TB wards will improve quality of the existing capacity, in accordance with recommended infection control measures and guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO). This ensures improvement of conditions for hospitalization of patients as well as better working conditions for the health workers, who are particularly at risk from infections.
According to official data published in the Global Tuberculosis Report by World Health Organization, number of TB cases in BiH in 2011 was 1360. The TB incidence, for that year, is estimated at 49 per 100 000 population and is continually declining since in 1990 as a result of better coverage of early diagnosis and treatment, and the establishment of infection control measures. According to the same source, in 2011. three Multi-Drug Resistant TB patients are registered.
