Sarajevo, 23 September 2019 - Deputy Communications and Transport Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Saša Dalipagić and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Communications and Transport of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Deputy Dalipagić stressed that the Memorandum is vital for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Against this background, UNDP will assist Bosnia and Herzegovina through technical expertise and knowledge in the development of the Framework Strategy for Road Safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Action Plan for the period 2020-2024, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 11. This Strategy is also to include draft road safety strategies of the Entities of the Republika Srpska, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Brčko District.

“Nearly 280 lives had been lost in road accidents in BiH in the last year. Today marks a kick-off of our cooperation on protecting the lives of children and all road users”, said Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov, noting that UNDP will support the organisation and preparation of a high-level donor conference to help raise funds for the implementation of certain projects in the Strategy.

“I cannot stress enough the importance for Bosnia and Herzegovina,” says Deputy Dalipagić, adding that we are all witnesses to traffic events across our country that is unfortunately at the top of the black list globally in terms of traffic accidents compared to population and number of vehicles.

Deputy Dalipagić thanked UNDP for recognising the issues of road safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina and active involvement in the development of a strategy to assist BiH in systematically addressing road safety issues, all with the aim of reducing road accidents and protecting people and property in traffic.
