Six smart solar benches are available to citizens of Sarajevo

Nov 27, 2017

There are six smart solar benches available to citizens of Sarajevo, located at three locations in the municipality Centar. The Embassy of Sweden provided financial support to this project, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) provided technical support. The "Steora" benches were designed and produced by the Croatian company "Include", one of the best producers of smart street furniture in Europe.

Using solar energy, the "Steora" benches allow charging of mobile devices, high speed internet access as well as ambient lighting. The benches have a built-in systems that provide a comfortable seating temperature at all weather conditions. Three benches were placed at Merhemić Square in part of the city called Ciglane, two on Vilsonovo šetalište promenade near the bridge "Suada Dilberović and Olga Sučić" and one in Hamze Hume street near the building of the municipality Centar.

With projects implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UNDP seeks to reduce the cost of use of energy through the promotion of renewable energy sources. "With the installation of six smart benches, with the financial support of the Swedish Embassy in BiH, we received devices that are energy-independent. Energy is provided for the charging of mobile devices using solar energy alone, and bench stands serve as a lighting system," said Sanjin Avdić, Head of Energy and Environment Sector of the UNDP in BiH.

Smart Benches have built-in sensors that allow collection of different data such as user information and atmospheric conditions and their analysis.

In order to raise public awareness about renewable energy sources and the importance of environmental protection, in 2015, UNDP and UNEP have set up six solar panels in Sarajevo with financial support from the Embassy of Sweden. An improved version of the smart bench "Steore" was set up after two years. Thanks to the efforts of the UNDP, UNEP and the Embassy of Sweden, now citizens and visitors of Sarajevo have a total of 12 smart benches placed at six locations at their disposal.
