UNDP BiH supports the socio-economic development of Trebinje and LjubinjeJul 26, 2017
City of Trebinje and Municipality of Ljubinje have developed long partnerships with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Sezin Sinanoglu, UNDP Resident Representative in BiH visited these areas to observe the implementation and impact of the activities of the local development projects and discuss the potential for future joint engagements in developmental programmes in Eastern Herzegovina.
“I would like to express my appreciation for commitment from local governments in implementation of activities which contribute to socio-economic development of Trebinje and Ljubinje, which they implement with support from UNDP. Together with other colleagues from UNDP, we will explore the possibility of extending the cooperation", said Ms. Sezin Sinanoglu, UNDP Resident Representative in BiH.
Trebinje has continued cooperation and partnership with UNDP in BiH. So far, UNDP BiH implemented seven projects in Trebinje and has three ongoing projects. Some of UNDP BiH projects operated in Trebinje for over ten years, including “HIV/AIDS, TB and fighting addiction diseases” project. In addition, there are numerous positive results of the projects which still effect on the better quality of lives to its citizen after the implementation period, such as Tourist info-centre, Museum of Herzegovina, and Centre for children with special needs.
Currently, UNDP BiH is supporting the development of the city with three groups of projects. Through the “Green Economic Development (GED)” project, UNDP BiH has implemented three energy efficiency projects in kindergarten, elementary school Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, and student centre. With “International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)” project, UNDP BiH is focusing on human safety by providing equipment and medical materials for sterilization of stray dogs in collaboration with the city and local veterinary clinic. In addition, the City of Trebinje has been recently selected as a participant in the “Regional Programme on Local Democracy in the Western Balkans (ReLOaD)” project, which aims to continue the successfully initiated cooperation with the civil society organizations from the previous project: “Reinforcement of Local Democracy (LOD)” project. The total contribution of UNDP to Trebinje area reaches more than 2,4 million BAM.
During the visit to Trebinje, Ms. Sinanoglu met a number of beneficiaries and partners and visited Tourist-info centre, Centre for children with special needs, and Elementary School Jovan Jovanović Zmaj.
“We thank UNDP for their support. Tourist info center (TIC) Trebinje is one of the best examples of successful and sustainable project,” said Mr. Žarko Vico, representative of Tourist info center in Trebinje. He elaborated that, thanks to continuous growth in the number of tourists, this center currently employs three times more workers than originally planned in 2010, when TIC was established.
UNDP team met Mr. Luka Petrović, Mayor of Trebinje, and discuss the potential for future contribution of UNDP BiH to the development of Trebinje. Considering the development potential of tourism of Trebinje area, there is a chance for joining the new “Via Dinarica” project in the forthcoming period.
“We appreciate the efforts and resources which UNDP has invested, and still invests, in Trebinje. Also, we feel honored to be selected as a partner city in UNDP regional project ReLOaD. We are interested in continuing and expanding cooperation, especially in the fields of energy efficiency and tourism,” said Mr. Luka Petrović, Mayor of Trebinje.
Ljubinje has been a partner of UNDP in BiH for almost a decade. So far, UNDP BiH implemented three projects in Ljubinje and has two ongoing projects. Two previous projects were supported via “Integrated Local Development Project (ILDP)” and LOD project. Current UNDP projects with the municipality of Ljubinje include two projects which are supported through “Strengthening the Role of Local Communities/Mjesne zajednice (MZ)” project and new phase of ILDP project. The total value of UNDP to Ljubinje area is more than 560.000 BAM.
“For small municipality like Ljubinje, projects which we implement in cooperation with UNDP, such as ILDP and MZ are of great importance for local development,” said Mr. Darko Krunić, Mayor of Ljubinje.
UNDP has invested almost three million marks in projects implemented in the Trebinje and Ljubinje areas so far, and given the considerations developmental potentials of Eastern Herzegovina region, there are a number of opportunities for expansion of future cooperation and new activities in these local governments in the forthcoming period.
