KM 1.2 million allocated to energy efficiency projects of four public buildings in Sarajevo Canton

Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Deputy Resident Representative in BiH and Čedomir Lukić, Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of the Sarajevo Canton, signed the Cost Sharing Agreement for the “Green Economic Development” Project for the part which refers to “Increasing of Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings in Sarajevo Canton.”  

The Agreement also envisages the completion of energy efficiency works on four main buildings: “Hamdija Kreševljaković” and “Hrasno” primary schools in the Stari Grad Sarajevo and Novo Sarajevo municipalities, administrative buildings of the Vogošća Municipality and of the “Hadžići” Health Care Centre.

Measures aimed at increasing the energy efficiency of these buildings are financed by the Government of Sweden, Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of the Sarajevo Canton, Novo Sarajevo Municipality, Stari Grad Sarajevo Municipality, Vogošća Municipality, Hadžići Municipality and the Environmental Protection Fund of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. UNDP will implement the activities as part of the “Green Economic Development” Project.  

The UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in BiH, Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov, emphasized on this occasion that “The Government of Sarajevo Canton hereby confirmed its determination to enhance energy efficiency and environmental protection,” and announced that the UNDP will continue to support institutions of BiH in the implementation of energy efficiency programmes. In that way, they will be provided assistance in the process of fulfilling obligations under the Paris Agreement and the Energy Community Treaty.”

A total of KM 1,201,905.00 has been allocated for thermal insulation of the buildings, out of which KM 435,620.00 was allocated by the Government of Sarajevo Canton, i.e. the line cantonal ministry; KM 400,000.00 was allocated by the UNDP through the Government of Sweden, and KM 366,285.00 was provided by the municipalities in whose territories the target public buildings are located.  

"This is a continuation of cooperation between the Canton and UNDP when it comes to the realization of this Project. Driven by positive effects and results accomplished previously, we have decided to carry out energy rehabilitation projects on four additional buildings this year too, with the support of our partners, of which I would especially like to mention the Government of Sweden. Schools were one of the main priorities this time as well,” stated Minister Lukić. Mr. Lukić expressed his satisfaction with the municipalities increasingly recognizing the relevance of this Project and supporting its implementation financially.  

Since 2013, UNDP is implementing a five year the „Green Economic Development” Project financed by the  Govenrment of Sweden, the Environmental Protection Fund of the Federation of BiH and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund of Republika Srpska. The Project partners are Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, entity’s ministries for spatial planning, cantonal ministries and other institutions.  

The goal of the Project is to create a favourable environment for investments into energy efficiency programmes, increase the number of „green jobs“ and contribute to market development which will lead to economic development. During the past period, energy efficiency measures have been implemented on 86 buildings, which contributed to:

  • Creating over 800 „green jobs“
  • Financial savings in public budgets amounting to over KM 2,700,000 annually
  • Decreasing energy consumption and achievings savings over 50%
  • Decreasing carbon dioxide emissions by around 7,000 metric tons annually
