United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Project „Biomass Energy for Employment and Energy Security“, financed by the Czech Development Agency, organized the study tour  for BiH representatives of respective ministries and trade chambers to the Czech Republic from 23 to 25 of May 2017.

The goal of the study tour was to improve the knowledge of BiH representatives and exchange experience with Czech experts and civil servants on the European Union accession process of Czech Republic and its impacts on the development of wood biomass sector in their country. BiH representatives had opportunity to discuss issues related to renewable energy sources and wood biomass with decision makers and experts from the Czech Development Agency, State Environmental Fund, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of industry and Trade and Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences of the Czech University of Life Sciences.

Michal Kaplan, Director of the Czech Development Agency, stated that “Bosnia and Herzegovina represents a priority of the Czech Development Agency when it comes to the wood biomass utilization and development of renewable energy sector”.

Representatives of the Měňany municipality shared their experiences related to construction and operation of wood biomass district heating system, fuel supply chain and economics of the district heating system. In 2008 this municipality was awarded the “E.ON ENERGY GLOBE AWARD ČR“ for project “Central Community Biomass Heating System“. This is the most prominent environmental protection prize that is awarded in individual countries within „The Energy Globe Award“.

Ms. Biljana Trivanović, Head of the Department for secondary energy and projects of the Ministry for Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, stated “In March 2016, Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the Renewable Energy Action Plan in order to fulfil obligations defined in the Energy Community Treaty regarding the achievement of share of renewable energy sources of 40% in total energy consumption of the country. During the definition of such goal, we faced with the lack of data and need for improvement of wood biomass sector to be able to act through legal framework and implementation of infrastructural projects in order to define this sector in the country. Thanks to the UNDP project, we will improve the wood biomass sector as well as the process of fulfilling the obligations of BiH through implementation of the Action Plan since we are trying to introduce a monitoring system for the implementation of the Action Plan in parallel with the donors”.

Project „Biomass Energy for Employment and Energy Security“ aims to improve the local population standard of living by fostering the exploitation and utilization of wood biomass through strategic approach, establishment of market value chain and citizens' awareness rising on benefits of using this energy source to achieve long term CO2 emission reductions.
