The construction of kindergarten for 150 children in Srebrenica startedApr 10, 2017
The contract signing ceremony and setting of foundation stone, which was attended by representatives of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, United Nations Development Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP BiH) and the Municipality of Srebrenica, marked the beginning of construction of the new kindergarten building for 150 children in Srebrenica and reconstruction of the regional road R- 453. These activities represent a continuation of cooperation that was agreed on at the "Srebrenica 2015 Investment and Development Conference". Within the scope of this cooperation the Government of the Republic of Serbia has donated 5 million euros, of which 2 million euros was given to support the municipal budget, and 3 million euros for projects that are important for the revitalization of public facilities and infrastructure in Srebrenica, including the construction of the new kindergarten building, reconstruction of the road and building a new production hall.
"The new kindergarten, the renovated main street and a new production hall in which the citizens of Srebrenica could find a job - this is a new future for Srebrenica, which we will build together, in peace. Just as there is nothing more beautiful and more valuable in Srebrenica than the children who live here and for whom we are building a new kindergarten, so there is no better way to connect Serbs and Bosniaks than with new roads, bridges, and production hall. In the past, we have shown that we know how to tear down, now the time has come to show to us and to others that we know how we could build together,” said Ms. Zorana Mihajlovic, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.
Existing kindergarten’s facility cannot meet the expectations of parents and the needs of children, because they do not meet modern standards of preschool accommodation. After finalization of the construction of a new building with additional facilities and playground, girls and boys in Srebrenica will get the opportunity to play, learn and stay in a modern kindergarten, which will be built in line with the highest urbanistic and pre-school educational standards. The investment in the development of travel infrastructure, and rehabilitation of R-453 road, which is part of the regional road that passes through the municipalities of Srebrenica and Bratunac, as well as city road, will allow better traffic communication for the citizens of these municipalities. The new production hall will create new opportunities for employment. These investments in the kindergarten and travel and production infrastructure will contribute to improving the quality of life of people in the Srebrenica region, and especially the children who will get new facilities for accommodation, learning and playing.
“UNDP has been active in Srebrenica since 2002 and is still committed to further work with its citizens and the local authorities to improve the quality of life for all. That’s why we are building this new kindergarten in Srebrenica, reconstructing the regional road R- 453 in the municipalities of Srebrenica and Bratunac, and building new industrial premises in Srebrenica, because we know how revitalization and recovery of infrastructure, and especially investment in the wellbeing of children contribute to creation of conducive environment for inclusive development,” said Ms. Sezin Sinanoglu, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP BiH Resident Representative.
It is important to note that all activities of project documentation preparation and selection of contractors were carried out in cooperation with representatives of the Serbian government and the Municipality of Srebrenica, in compliance with UNDP procedures, to ensure transparency and to obtain the best quality of works for money invested.
“After several months of joint work of the municipal administration and representatives of the UNDP, we started with construction of the kindergarten, which is very important facility for Srebrenica," said Mr. Mladen Grujičić, Mayor of Srebrenica.
"I believe that the children of Srebrenica deserve this kind of kindergarten, and soon we will get the institution for pre-school education that will have the capacity to accommodate all the children whcih would like to go to kindergarten," said Ms. Tifa Efendić, director of the kindergarten in Srebrenica.
The completion of construction of the kindergarten building and reconstruction of the road R-453 is planned for September 2017.
