Via Dinarica: training for 14 new grant beneficiaries for rehabilitation of mountain facilities

Dec 23, 2016

A training for representatives of mountaineering associations, for 14 new grants awarded under the public call for rehabilitation of mountain facilities along Via Dinarica Green Trail was held in Sarajevo, within the Via Dinarica project. The Via Dinarica is an initiative of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Development Programme Country Office Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP BiH), and is implemented in cooperation with national partners.

“Via Dinarica is a concept enabling, not only sustainable development, but also full respect for the environment, the preservation of local culture and creation of development opportunities for new generations. The meeting provided an opportunity for the beneficiaries to present their respective project to each other and to establish cooperation for further development of Via Dinarica Green Trail”,  said Božena Kaltak, Via Dinarica Project Manager.

The Green Trail follows the lower forest belt of the Dinaric Alps, and the Blue Trail goes across the coastal Dinarides with a magnificent view of the Adriatic Sea. The White Trail follows the highest limestone peaks of the Dinaric Alps, that are covered in snow most of the time. The project aims to support the process of establishing the Via Dinarica corridor as a tourist product that provides sustainable livelihoods for a broad spectrum of stakeholders in local communities along the trail.

Mountaineers from the Sports Mountaineering Association „Vitorog“ Šipovo are among the new beneficiaries, with the membership base of 100 active mountaineers. President of the Association, Milan Vuleta, has underlined the significance of the awarded grant for the improvement of their offer: “I am very happy that USAID and UNDP have recognized our efforts on promotion and protection of natural beauties of Šipovo area. The support we receive through Via Dinarica will help us in providing a higher quality service to mountaineers and guests.”

The project objective of “Via Dinarica: A Platform for Sustainable Tourism Development and Local Economic Growth” is the development of potentials of the Dinaric Alpes corridor and its promotion. It has been designed to reduce economic, social, and regional disparities in BiH through the promotion of the Via Dinarica as a regional tourism attraction and increase BiH’s standing in the competitive nature-based tourism sphere.
