Exchange of experiences for better flood forecasting

Feb 10, 2016

Regional working meeting in Sarajevo

UNDP BiH and Sava River Watershed Agency of Sarajevo have organized a Regional working meeting where the projects were presented through which the real-time flood forecasting systems have been implemented or are currently under way  on the day of 09 February, 2016, in the river basins of Sava and Soca in Slovenia, Sava and Kupa up to Sisak municipality in Croatia, Una and Sana in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and within the UNDP project of “Technology transfer for climate resilient flood management in Vrbas River Basin”.

The aim of the meeting was to exchange experience and confirm the commitments to unified approach to the methodology of the real-time flood forecasting, previously expressed by the projects’ beneficiaries, Sava River Watershed Agency in Sarajevo, “Vode Srpske” Public Institution, Federal Hydro-meteorological Institute of BiH and Hydro-meteorological Institute of Republika Srpska.

The real-time flood forecasting systems and timely floods warning in the Vrbas river basin is introduced in BiH for the first time. BiH is significantly exposed to the threats of climate change, but has very limited capacity to address and adapt to its negative impacts, in particular the frequency and magnitude of floods from its major rivers which have tripled in frequency in the last decade. Therefore, it is very important to establish efficient cooperation with colleagues in Croatia, and Slovenia in order to implement this Project in as efficient manner as possible, and, moreover ensure more efficient protection of inhabitants within Vrbas River Basin.
