Selected research papers will be presented at the workshop on “Migration in Function of Development” to take place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from November 17th to 18th, 2014, as a follow-up to the “Research Workshop on Migration from BiH”, held in September 2012 in Sarajevo. The working languages of the Research Workshop are B/C/S and English, with simultaneous translation provided.
The workshop will be held as a part of the joint project between the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Swiss Cooperation Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), entitled Migration and Development: Mainstreaming the concept of migration and development into relevant policies, plans and actions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project seeks to systematically mobilise and build potentials of migrants from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the relevant areas of transition and socioeconomic development, ensuring the visible impacts of their contribution to the country's progress across all institutional and social levels. Accordingly, the research workshop aims to raise awareness and facilitate dialogue between interested stakeholders on migration and development, as well as to highlight the importance of migration for development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in addition to creating preconditions for its inclusion in the integrated development strategies at all levels of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The main objectives of the workshops are to:
- Present comparative experience with regard to migration as a component of socioeconomic development (primarily research relating to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also other Western Balkan countries such as Montenegro, Croatia, FYROM and/or Serbia);
- Discuss the challenges and opportunities of tapping on migration in function of development of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Given the significant number of emigrants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and their great potential, the primary intention of the research workshop is to gather researchers who have studied different experiences of migrants, especially from the social and economic aspects. In this regard, it is important to underline the strengths and weaknesses of the existing environment in terms of incentives or obstacles to be removed for a successful social and economic development of our country (either through financial investments, transfers of human capital and technology, retraining/additional training of the unemployed, development of educational and health systems, etc.).
Organisers are to cover travel expenses and hotel accommodations for one presenter/author of the approved research paper. Participation of additional presenters/authors is possible, with hotel accommodation provided by the organiser, while their travel expenses are to be covered from own funds.
