United Nations throughout the world join celebration of the International Women’s Day recognizing that the “Equality for women is progress for all”. On this day the world celebrates the progress made for women’s rights, women’s empowerment and gender equality. UN Agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina also recognize that this progress has been slow, uneven, and that women and girls in Bosnia and Herzegovina and throughout the world face numerous challenges.

According to the Report “Progress towards the Realisation of Millennium Development Goals in BiH 2013”, even though female students continuously outperformed their male counterparts in terms of higher education, this advantage is not reflected in the field of work and employment. Men continue to outnumber women in the employed population in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with only 32.8% women being an active part of labour force, which is the lowest level of representation of women in the labour market in South East Europe.

Gender equality is, first and foremost, a human right. Empowering women is also an indispensable tool for advancing development and reducing poverty. Empowered women contribute to the health and productivity of whole families and communities and to improved prospects for the next generation. UN Agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina remain committed to providing support in all efforts aimed at creating a society mindful of its entire people, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, age or provenance, and we are calling on all people in decision making positions to give their personal and professional contribution.

Much remains to be done – women need to be recognized for their capacity to contribute to a fairer, more inclusive society and for their extraordinary contributions to sustaining their families, their children, their elderly and stepping up to the challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

So let us celebrate the International Women’s Day today and work for the equal society all days in the years to come.
