MDG-F Activities in Herzegovina

Two opening ceremonies were held in Herzegovina on June 12, 2013 – Centre for Information, Counseling and Training (CISO) in Široki Brijeg and The Office of The Public  Company Vjetrenica in Popovo Polje were opened within the activities of 3 MDG-F programmes: Culture for Development, Environment and Climate Change Programme and Youth Employability and Retention Programme funded by Government of Kingdom of Spain.

H. E. Maria Aurora Mejia Errasquin, Ambassador of Kingdom of Spain in BiH and Yuri Afanasiev, UN Resident Coordinator in BiH, were present at the both openings.

Centre for Information, Counseling and Trainig (CISO), opened in  Široki Brijeg will provide standardized, quality services to unemployed youth, an important step towards reducing inequalities in opportunities especially for rural youth, who typically have fewer resources. This is the 17th opened CISO in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Public company Vjetrenica was established to support the efforts of local authorities and Municipality Ravno to preserve a cave proposed for UNESCO’s World Heritage List. In order to ensure suitable conditions for managing cave Vjetrenica, the traditional stone house, were the administrative office is situated, was completely renovated. Vjetrenica, is the world's second deepest known cave and the richest cave in the world in terms of subterranean biodiversity.

Culture for Development is a partnership programme implemented by three United Nations agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, namely the UNDP, UNICEF and UNESCO, in close collaboration with the national Ministry of Civil Affairs, the entity Ministries of Culture and Education, as well as other institutions responsible for education and culture in the country. The programme is funded by the Spanish Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund, within the thematic framework of "culture and development",  with co-financing provided by the Government of BiH.

Environment and Climate Change programme titled “Mainstreaming environmental governance: linking local and national action in BiH” is jointly implemented by United Nations Development Programme/United Nations Volunteers (UNDP/UNV), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),  Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the BiH Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations,  the FBiH and RS Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management, the participating municipalities and civil society organisations.

The Youth Employability and Retention Programme is jointly implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, IOM and UNV in partnership with the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs, BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, Entity Ministries responsible for labor and education, the BiH Agency for Statistics, Entity Agencies for Statistics, Public Employment Service offices across the country, primary and general secondary schools, municipalities and rural communities, individual firms as well as private sector associations, and civil society organizations from the community level to the Diaspora.
