The final conference of the project “Mainstreaming Karst Peatland Rehabilitation concerns into key economic sectors" – KARST project, at which the results and achievements of the project were presented, was held in UN House on Tuesday May 28, 2013. The conference was addressed by the UNDP Energy and Environment Sector Leader, Mr. Sanjin Avdic and the Head of the Department of Environmental Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina and National focal point of GEF for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Senad Oprašić.
The main objective of the project was to support the process of spatial planning at the cantonal level, with emphasis on the biodiversity conservation with development of rules for the use and management of karst fields.
"As a part of the project in the last five years a lot of effort has been invested in the field of integration of guidelines for the conservation of biodiversity in the spatial plan of Canton 10, and the development of guidelines for the rehabilitation of peatlands, as well as the promotion of Livanjsko polje and raising awareness about the importance of sustainable environmental management, with an emphasis on the protection of biodiversity." said Mr. Oprašić.
The project "Mainstreaming Karst Peatland Rehabilitation concerns into key economic sectors" – KARST project, was funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and implemented by the UNDP BiH in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BIH, Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning, Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of the Canton 10 and the Ministry of Civil Engineering, Reconstruction, Spatial Planning and Environmental Protection of the Canton 10.
