Opening of Reconstructed Laboratories for Diagnosis of Tuberculosis - National Tuberculosis Programme
The opening of reconstructed laboratories for diagnosis of tuberculosis was held on March 12th, 2013 at 10:30 in four BH cities - Bihać, Foča, Travnik and Zenica. The reconstruction of the laboratories was implemented within the project “Strengthening of DOTS Strategy and Improving National Tuberculosis Programme, Including Multidrug Resistant and Infection Control, in Bosnia and Herzegovina”.
The reconstruction of laboratories will enable laboratories to improve working conditions in accordance with recommended infection control measures and WHO guidelines. After reconstruction, the laboratories also fulfill the BSL 2 safety recommendations (bio-safety level 2), which provides for safer working conditions for laboratory employees and better processing quality of laboratory analyses results.
Within reconstruction and in addition to the renovation of premises and installation of ventilation systems, laboratories are equipped with a bio-safety cabinet, necessary for the work of TB laboratory. This ensures maximum protection for laboratory staff while minimizing contamination of the environment.
Since 2008, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), financed by Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), improved the work of TB laboratories and enabled the alignment of their work with international recommendations. Also, professionals working in the laboratories underwent additional training in the country and abroad.
During previous period, the quality control system was established and conducted every six months in cooperation with supranational laboratory in Germany. Regular control shows that the quality of reconstructed laboratories is in accordance with the European Union standards and that BH citizens nowadays have the same quality of services as citizens of the EU countries.
Cooperation with laboratories will be continued until end of 2013 and within this Project, the most necessary laboratory equipment will also be ensured, in order to improve laboratory services.
This project is implemented by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ministry of Health of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Republika Srpska, Department for Health and other services of Brčko District, with the support of UNDP, and it is financed by the funds of consolidated grant of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) to BiH.
