    Strategic Preparation and Prevention Within and Between States Crucial for Managing Natural Disasters, South East Europe Conference Concludes

    SARAJEVO, 6 November 2014 – Sharing of information and solutions for reducing flood risk, and enhancing cross-border cooperation in risk mitigation and flood protection was discussed during a two-day regional conference “Floods in South East Europe – Lessons learned and ways ahead” that concluded in Sarajevo today. The conference was organized by the Security Ministry of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the OSCE Mission to BiH, UNDP Office in BiH and RACVIAC Centre for Security Co-operation.

    Rehabilitation of 111 housing units completed under EU Floods Recovery Programme; selection of further beneficiaries under way

    Today marks the completion of 111 housing units rehabilitated through the emergency housing assistance component of the EU Floods Recovery Programme. Thanks to EU funds, 30 families from Banja Luka, 25 from Bijeljina, 21 from Doboj, 15 from Orašje, eight from Živinice, seven from Maglaj, three from Tuzla, and one from both Lopare and Šamac have got their homes back.

    Disarmament Week Marked in Bosnia and Herzegovina

    Every day across the globe 1,500 people lose their lives in armed violence; each year 12 billion rounds are produced and every arms-related death is followed by another 28 cases of injury. These facts warn of the necessity to work continuously in promoting peace and disarmament. To mark the Disarmament Week, a sculpture by Darko Sobot, Bosnian sculptor was unveiled at the United Nations House in Sarajevo on Wednesday 29 October 2014. This work of art brings the same message of non-violence and peace-building as sculptures such as 'Nonviolence' and 'Swords to Plowshares’ which sit outside the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York. From now on, the UN House in BiH will contain a constant reminder of the importance of the process of disarmament and the dangers of illegal weapons.

    Public call for flood recovery assistance aimed at reconstruction of flood affected housing units

    The European Union Floods Recovery Programme is planning to provide intervention assistance for reconstruction of housing units in flood affected areas. The assistance will include reconstruction of housing units in the municipalities of Sanski Most, Prijedor, Banja Luka, Laktaši, Tuzla, Živinice, Modriča, Srebrenik, Lukavac, Zenica, Žepče.

    UN Day Marked - For CoUNtless DAYs of Play and Joy

    United Nations Day is celebrated with various activities across the globe to mark the adoption of the United Nations Charter and its fundamental principles of global tolerance, dialogue and peace. Under the slogan For many days of play and joy (Za pUNo DANa igre i radosti), United Nations Day will be celebrated with voluntary actions to set up and improve playgrounds in Doboj, Sanski Most, Kladanj, Čelinac and Šamac on 27 October. Activities will gather more than 300 local volunteers, employees of United Nations agencies and members of civil society organisations, who will jointly set up the equipment, paint the facades and improve playgrounds and facilities that cater for more than 1,700 children and citizens of communities affected by floods of this May.

    Roundtable "The introduction of the unique emergency call number 112”

    The Ministry of Security BiH, supported by the UNDP BiH, is organizing today a Roundtable on the topic of "The introduction of the unique emergency call number 112” in the Operational and communication center of BiH-112. This Round Table is an activity foreseen by the current project document " Disaster Risk Reduction Initiative in Bosnia and Herzegovina“, implemented by the Ministry of Security BiH and UNDP BiH, and in cooperation with the Office for Civil Protection of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBIH), Republika Srpska Directorate for Protection and Rescue, Department of Public Safety of Brcko District, cantonal and municipal authorities and relevant agencies, civil society organizations and international organizations.

    EU Floods Recovery Programme: The Rehabilitated Elementary School “19th April” in Derventa Reopened

    The rehabilitated Elementary School “19. April” in Derventa was reopened today, symbolically marking the beginning of the new school year. The school suffered severe damage during the floods in June 2010 and in May 2014. The total value of EU investment for the school's post-flood rehabilitation was 52,842.47 EUR (103,350.89 BAM), and the rehabilitation works included electricity refitting, new sanitary systems, new flooring, joinery replacement, refurbishing of walls and a new facade. The school has a total of 677 students, and classes were organised without obstructions while the rehabilitation works were ongoing.

    EU Floods Recovery Programme: Dr Renzo Daviddi Opened Reconstructed School in Maglaj

    On Friday, 17 October 2014, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Dr Daviddi officially opened the Mixed Secondary School Maglaj and Edhem Mulabdić High School in Maglaj, both reconstructed as part of the EU Floods Recovery Programme funded by the European Union. The school suffered severe damage during the floods in May 2014. The EU-financed restoration works included electricity refitting, new heating system, new sanitary systems, new flooring, joinery replacement, refurbishing of walls, thermo-insulated facade and roof. The total value of EU investment for the school rehabilitation was 339,733.78 EUR (664,461.51 KM).

    Mine Action: Land Release for Improved Livelihoods in Bosnia and Herzegovina

    Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Centre (BHMAC) has cooperatively organised a round-table event along with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that features international experts from UNDP, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the Implementation Support Unit of the AP Mine Ban Treaty (ISU). In a knowledge-sharing session attended by key national and international partners, the experts from the specialized fields shared know-how on land release methods for improving the rate of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s mine clearance.

    Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Training

    Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adoption Training (with a CEDRIG component) organized by OSCE and Swiss Government is taking place from the 15th through the 17th of October 2014. The main objective of this Training is to define disaster and climate change, and identify how both of these factors affect today’s society. Training will focus not only on what can be done to reduce the negative impacts of natural events and climate change, but also on the need for a better coordination and cooperation amongst relevant regional and national actors.

    Official start of the heating season in Doboj – central heating system reconstructed

    Doboj City Heating Plant officially started the heating season today on 15 October 2014, with official commissioning of the plant. Despite considerable damages to the Doboj Heating Plant in the May floods, thanks to the financial assistance of the Government of the Kingdom of Norway in the amount of BAM 979,294, more than 8,500 households, public institutions, as well as all Doboj kindergartens and schools, are now ready for the approaching cold weather. Reconstruction of the central heating system was implemented through the UN Floods Recovery Programme Today, For All of Us.

    The Cash for Work: The Programme that Restores Local Communities

    When the water level in Olovo started to raise, no one believed to which proportions it could go, no one could believe that Municipality Olovo is in great threat of flooding. And it happened, the River overflowed its banks, sank all first floors, houses, schools, reaching 170 meters in height. Most abundant rains in last 120 years, in May this year lead to catastrophe in many cities and municipalities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Olovo was among them.

    TB Diagnostics Lab Opened

    Opened laboratory for the diagnosis of tuberculosis On Thursday, the 9th of October at the Institute of Public Health in Banja Luka, the reconstructed laboratory for the diagnosis of tuberculosis has been opened with support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, worth about a 1 million BAM.

    Post-flood rehabilitation of 29 priority houses completed under the EU Floods Recovery Programme

    The rehabilitation works on 29 priority houses financed by the EU Floods Recovery Programme have been completed under the first phase of the housing component. Thanks to EU financing, three families from Maglaj, eight families from both Doboj and Banja Luka and 10 families from the Bijeljina region can now return home.
