Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Biomass Energy Sector – with a Special Focus on Srebrenica Region

June 21, 2013

Within the framework of the BiH Biomass Energy for Employment and Energy Security – Biomass project, UNDP has published a study on Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Biomass Energy Sector – with a Special Focus on Srebrenica Region. This study is the result of an attempt to summarize technical information regarding biomass energy baseline emissions and a cost-benefit analysis of the biomass energy sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a special focus on the Srebrenica region.

It draws on a biomass energy demonstration project designed to deliver renewable energy in the form of heating amongst nine schools in the municipalities of Srebrenica, Bratunac and Milići. Biomass energy has the potential to cost-effectively increase heating capacity in a environmentally friendly manner while generating benefits for the regional economy. While the study is focused on a particular region, the results presented are of interest for the project’s replication elsewhere in BiH. This study is focused on wood pellets and woodchips, which have the greatest potential in the Srebrenica region.
