Local Communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina: What do citizens say?

March 24, 2017

The survey "Local Communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina: What do citizens say?" was conducted as an initial survey within the project Strengthening the Role of Local Communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), which is a joint project of the Swiss Government and the Government of Sweden, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The general objective of the project is to improve the quality of life of the citizens of BiH by improving the services provided at the local level and increasing democratic accountability and social inclusion.

The method chosen to achieve this objective is the stimulation of local development under the leadership of the community and the revival of government at the community level through local communities (MZ) as places where the government is closest to the people and as a fundamental organizations that serve the communities of about 1,000 people, where there is a possibility for genuine participation and joint action.

The overall objective of the survey realized for the project - Strengthening the Role of Local Communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina - was to conduct a comprehensive survey in 97 local communities in 23 selected local governments, with a particular emphasis on understanding of the attitudes of citizens towards local issues, their involvement in local decision-making and satisfaction with the services provided to them at the local level.

Survey results will be co-owned by each unit of local government. Therefore, in addition to collecting basic information for the project and evaluation of the overall mood of the community, the survey will also be used by local governments and local communities with the aim of creating strategic decisions related to the effective involvement of citizens and improving the delivery of public services.
