Framework Plan for Tuberculosis Prevention and Control in Healthcare Facilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina

July 19, 2013

Tuberculosis (TB), along with HIV/AIDS, is the most important infectious disease. According to the World Health Organisation, 8.8 million persons suffer from TB and 1.4 million deceased from TB in 2010. More than 95% of all deaths caused by TB occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Though very slowly, estimated number of TB patients has been decreasing: TB incidence rates showed a descending trend after 2002, as did the absolute number of TB patients after 2006. It is expected that the world has been on the way to reach the millennium development goal to stop TB by 2015. However, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has been recorded in almost all countries with organized TB surveillance. This represents a major challenge for future.

The goal of this Plan is to provide determinants in prevention and control of tuberculosis transmission in healthcare facilities (nosocomial TB) and recommendations for reducing the risk of exposure to and transmission of tuberculosis amongst health workers. The Plan also covers facilities with congregate settings in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
